Real-time Interoperable ystems like WebEOC help California fight wild fires.
In October 2007, wildfires burned through nearly 500,000 acres and displaced half a million residents over four days in Southern California. (external web link to NY Times article) Internet tools like WebEOC, a software system that allows information to be shared by multiple users at a time, and reverse-911, which automatically calls home phone numbers of a certain neighborhood or geographic grid to signal evacuation alerts (using integrated GIS applications like EmerGeo mapping), were introduced after the 2003 fires.
Multi-Agency Emergency Interoperability in Western Australia
In October 2004, the Western Australian Government approved the implementation of the Shared Land Information Platform (SLIP). (220Kb PDF) EmerGeo Mapping software is being used to enable a single point of access to government spatial information and services related to emergencies. SLIP is proposed to provide common services for all Western Australian Government, commercial and civil lines of business with a requirement for spatial information.
