EmerGeo Adds Google Earth and Emergency Notification Services

EmerGeo’s new Interfaces deliver real-time situation maps and alerts to anyone, anywhere.

VANCOUVER, B.C., October 10, 2006

The EmerGeo mapping software application, developed by EmerGeo Solutions of Vancouver, B.C. has been used by emergency managers around the world. EmerGeo has been ‘disaster tested’ during several events including wildfires in British Columbia and major oil spill exercise simulations.

EmerGeo™ mapping is an OpenGIS-based system designed to streamline information flows between first responders in the field and decision-makers in emergency operation centres (EOC’s). An optional interface to the world’s leading crisis management software (WebEOC®) gives users an ability to visualize their incident, resource and other data on electronic maps.

Now, emergency managers can visualize their emergency situation data in Google Earth®. “EmerGeo has always offered customers the option of connecting to their existing internal mapping (GIS) systems and using EmerGeo to overlay and manage rapidly changing emergency information. EmerGeo’s new Google Earth Interface gives customers the capability to rapidly display what is happening on the ground anywhere in the world and distribute this data in a controlled and secure way to other agencies, the media and the public”, explains Mike Morrow    , Managing Director of EmerGeo Solutions Inc.

Google Earth brings an exciting new integrated global emergency management platform to share information and facilitate improvement of communication and coordination. “We are continually adding interfaces to leading emergency management technologies into our solution to ensure the kind of communication and collaboration problems experienced during 911 never happen again”, adds Morrow.

How the Google Earth® Interface Works
The basic Google Earth client can be downloaded free of charge from http://earth.google.com/ or a professional version with more capabilities can be purchased. Google Earth Enterprise can be installed on customer’s internal servers if they prefer to combine enterprise data with Google Earth data.

The EmerGeo system is installed on a server, with pre-loaded map data that can be from commercial suppliers, imported from the customer’s mapping systems, or generated from live data connections to customer’s enterprise GIS system(s) using OpenGIS standard interfaces such as Web Map Services.

Authorized users simply login to EmerGeo’s free web map client through their Internet Explorer web browser, select a map they’ve been given access to and click on the Google button. Click on an EmerGeo emergency layer (e.g. incident name) and Google immediately flies you in to see the latest emergency situation data being published from EmerGeo (or WebEOC®).

Emergency management personnel use EmerGeo’s Smart Client to draw or plot the emergency data and have a choice to publish to one or more maps viewed by internal or external agencies – a controlled and secure workflow results.

“This is an excellent briefing and communication tool. You may have seen Google Earth used on CNN’s newscasts to explain disaster situations and military operations overseas. Now EmerGeo gives emergency management organizations a quick, easy and controlled way to share and track real-time emergency information among responding agencies, with the media and the public”, explains Morrow.

Alert/Notification Interface
An interface to one of the largest, fastest and secure emergency notification service is also now bundled with EmerGeo software. EmerGeo Solutions has partnered with American Alert Network (AEN), a division of GenuTec Business Solutions, Inc. based in Laguna Niguel, California. EmerGeo users can now target voice and data messages to specific individuals and groups by geographic area(s). Users simply draw or select areas on EmerGeo maps, accept the generated callout list or modify it on the fly, then click a button to immediately initiate the callouts. A real-time callout progress report can be monitored.

This Emergency Notification capability is helping emergency management agencies save time and saving time can save lives. It is imperative to have a system capable of quickly handling an event of any scale. AEN hosted services are by far the largest and fastest in the world, with hardware and circuit locations distributed throughout North America. If multiple events strike simultaneously or devastate a large region, AEN has the capacity to handle every event quickly. Customer’s data is extremely secure, with distributed redundancy that is second to none.
